Five Fun Ways to Embrace Spring in Seattle

Era Living News
Cherry blossoms as Seattle's University of Washington

Spring is blooming in Seattle—and so are the opportunities to get out and have fun! Whether you’re a visitor or a local resident, now’s a great time to enjoy the city’s sights and scenes. From dining and culture to breathtaking nature, you can find it all. Here are some ideas and activities to help you connect with the Seattle community and celebrate spring!

1. Behold Seattle’s blooms.

If you love spring flowers, you’re in the right place in Seattle! Highlighting the start of the season are the spectacular Seattle cherry blossoms. These beauties typically begin their peak bloom in late March continuing into April. A favorite spot to view them is the University of Washington Quad, which you can also enjoy on a webcam—along with links to cherry blossom updates.

Seattle’s springtime events also feature the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival in April. As part of this month-long celebration, explore various tulip gardens or attend events like the Tulip Festival and Street Fair April 18-20 in Mount Vernon.

Some other places to savor Seattle’s spring blossoms include the Washington Park Arboretum, the Bellevue Botanical Garden, and Chihuly Garden and Glass, featuring the works of artist Dale Chihuly, along with an urban garden, theater, and more.

2. Hop aboard a water adventure.

With 147.52 miles of freshwater shoreline and 53.38 miles of saltwater, Seattle offers a wealth of water-related activities.

Embark on a whale-watching tour from Seattle or the San Juan Islands to pursue sightings of orcas, gray whales, and humpback whales. Or take a ferry ride to popular destinations like Bainbridge Island, Whidbey Island, or Vashon Island.

For a more hands-on adventure, consider a boat rental at The Center for Wooden Boats. Or charter a cruise around historic Lake Union. The Center for Wooden Boats also offers a “living museum”—providing a great way to learn about Seattle’s maritime heritage.

3. Connect with local culture and entertainment.

Discover exciting events like the Titanic exhibition (closing April 27) or The Museum of Flight (April 4-June 17). Also, check out Seattle’s vast visual art scene, music, and performing arts events—from museums to opera to ballet.

Looking to connect even more with the local community? Help Seattleites kick off the spring season at the Washington State Spring Fair April 10-13 and 17-20. Or celebrate the music, arts, and heritage of the Pacific Northwest May 23-26 at the 54th annual Northwest Folklife Festival, where you can discover the meaning of this year’s cultural focus: Ikigai.

4. Delight in Seattle’s dining scene (and longer spring days!).

Did you know that Seattle’s northern latitude causes it to gain daylight faster in spring than places closer to the equator? With longer days and warmer temperatures, what better time to get out and enjoy the many dining options in Seattle?

If you crave a beautiful setting, book a table at one of Seattle’s restaurants featuring spectacular city and water views. Or explore some of the new restaurants featuring dishes from barbecue to pizza to dim sum. Also, consider one of the city’s brunch spots if you’re seeking to enjoy an earlier meal with friends or loved ones.

For a truly one-of-a-kind Seattle “foodie” experience, visit the iconic Pike Place Market to find amazing foods, crafts, and small businesses. Also, plan a visit to some of Seattle’s other farmers’ markets to inspire your next meal or dining endeavor.

5. Hit the parksnature parks AND ballparks!

With winter finally behind us, now’s a great time to enjoy walking or cycling on the scenic Burke-Gilman Trail, which spans almost 20 miles between Seattle and Bothell near the northeast end of Lake Washington. You can also head out to one of Seattle’s many stunning parks for your next spring outing—and enjoy the exercise and fresh air that comes with a fun day outdoors.

Speaking of parks, spring baseball season is in full swing for the Seattle Mariners at the T-Mobile Park. Join local fans in cheering on the hometown team. Also, check out the home schedule for Seattle’s Sounders soccer team playing throughout the upcoming months at Lumen Field.
